Dear Colleagues: Welcome to the September issue of Psychiatry 2010.
The authors explore the current state of the psychiatry drug development pipeline.
The authors explore the feature of emotional hyper-reactivity in patients with borderline personality disorder from the perspective of clinical experience as well as through evidence from empirical studies.
Authors assess the characteristics and correlates of sleep problems in patients with lifetime posttraumatic stress disorder and ongoing sleep disturbance not due to obstructive sleep apnea or other diagnosed sleep disorders. Authors find that sleep quality among posttraumatic stress disorder patients in active treatment is worse in direct relation to more severe posttraumatic hypervigilance symptoms.
There exists uncertainty regarding the role of magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of intensive care unit delirious patients. This case series describes preliminary magnetic resonance imaging findings obtained because of delirium, subsequent in-hospital clinical decisions, and post-discharge neurocognitive outcomes in intensive care unit survivors.
The presented patient gives a particularly striking example of foreign body ingestion and other bizarre behavioral aberrations on the background of different neurological and psychopathological findings, challenging both medical interdisciplinary and ethical viewpoints of hospital staff.
The roles of the cerebellum in pain perception, attention deficit disorder, autism, dementia, and schizophrenia are discussed. Practical observations and tests to assess cerebellar function in the psychiatrist’s office are described.
Reported herein is the case of a 26-year-old male patient, who tried to commit suicide by heating liquid mercury from a clinical thermometer and inhaling the mercury vapor.
